Unleashing Your Potential

The only person you are destined to become is the person you decide to be.

- Ralph Waldo Emerson

Have you ever felt that spark inside you, a desire to become the best version of yourself? Welcome to the exhilarating world of personal growth and self-improvement! This journey is about reaching new heights and transforming your life into one full of purpose, fulfillment, and happiness. By setting clear goals, developing empowering habits, learning from your experiences, and embracing continuous evolution, you can unlock your full potential and create a meaningful life.

Setting Goals: Your Roadmap to Success

·       Envision Your Future Self

Before we do anything, we need to understand who we are. What is our passion, and how do we perceive our purpose? Granted, these are some deep concepts, but they are all necessary to ensure we are headed in the right direction. If you don’t have these concepts on your dashboard, it would be like going on vacation with no idea where you are going, why you are at all, and how this trip will change your life.

Take a moment to visualize who you want to become. Picture yourself thriving in all aspects of life—whether it's in your career, relationships, or personal endeavors. Once you have this vision in mind, break it down into actionable steps, or goals, that will be your mile markers on your journey.

·       The Blueprint for Success

Once you understand your destination, you must begin the goal-setting process. It is best to start with very broad goals and then hone these down to specific steps that can be tracked as you move down your intended path. Make sure the goals are within your wheelhouse. Nothing is worse than having goals that are so long and broad that you can’t make any progress. Your goals must allow you to continue moving forward, or you will become stuck and quit on your dreams and aspirations. Goals that are clearly defined and give you direction will make your path smoother.

This begs the question, “How will I know what specific steps must be on that list?” This is where you lean into your mentors, those who have been where you want to go and have succeeded when they got there. Ask them; they will give you direction and motivation to continue your journey.

·       From Vision to Reality

Don’t hesitate. Don’t make excuses. If this is truly your goals and dreams, your passion and purpose, then nothing will stand in the way. Success stories abound with the sacrifices people have made to start their journey. On the other hand, hard-luck stories are easy to find from those unwilling to tough it out through the hard times on their way to life-changing success.

Developing New Habits: Building Blocks of Change

·       Start Small: The Power of Baby Steps

Don’t be intimidated by the idea that you must build new habits to accompany your new path. Begin with small changes that are easy to integrate into your daily routine. When I speak to people who want to start strength training, I always talk about taking baby steps. Learn How To, How Fast, first, the last thing they need to worry about is How Much they are lifting. Start small, and your body will tell you when to add more weight.

It is the same in your professional and personal pursuits. Learn the fundamentals of your endgame and then slowly add new ideas to these parts of your foundation. As you grow professionally, what seemed like a lot will become more manageable, and then it will become part of your everyday life. These manageable steps help build momentum without overwhelming you.

·       Create Rewards: Celebrate Your Wins

Because most journeys are long and involved, we must celebrate our achievements. Every time you achieve a mini-goal or maintain a new habit for a week, reward yourself! Whether treating yourself to something special or simply taking time out for relaxation, these rewards reinforce positive behaviors and keep motivation high.

The key to these rewards is not to let them take you off your path. Let them spur you on to your next conquest and to the next obstacle you overcame. Involve your “team” (Family and Friends) in your journey so they can support you and be your cheerleaders during the hard times.

·       Remove Obstacles: Simplify Your Path

Speaking of obstacles, changes can be challenging. Identify what might slow or derail your progress and take steps to eliminate these barriers before you get to them. If you have an issue with procrastinating, make sure that you build breaks into your work schedule. When you “feed the monster”, the need to look at your phone every so often, it will allow you to stay on track.

Planning your work day is essential to being as productive as possible. Without a plan, it is easy to get caught up in a “death scroll,” and an hour will blow by before you know it. Then, you get into “catch-up” mode, and your work becomes sloppy as you try to compensate for lost time. Schedule blocks of time to work, relax, eat, and take care of tasks that, if left unattended, will stack up and end up causing you to lose large chunks of time. If you always stay ahead, you will never fall behind!

Find Your Truthtellers: Looking for Personal Feedback

·       Self-Reflection: Know Thyself

Personal growth thrives on self-reflection. Take time regularly to assess your strengths and weaknesses. What have you learned from past experiences? How do they fit with your new path? This introspective process is crucial for identifying areas for improvement.

Your path will take you out of your previous comfort zone. To stay ahead of the schedule, you need to evolve and adapt to the needs of the new reality that you have stepped into. The key is to make sure that you have used your mentors to help you prepare for these changes.

·       Seek Feedback: Embrace Constructive Criticism

Have the courage to ask the “stupid question! If you don’t know it, then it’s not stupid. The only thing that is stupid is you if you aren’t willing to ask the question. Whether from friends, colleagues, or mentors, constructive criticism provides valuable insights that can aid your growth journey.

I view the world as a vast jigsaw puzzle. I use questions to find new pieces. These pieces help collect other pieces on my board, so I eventually have a clearer picture of where to look for more information. I have no problems picking up a phone or raising my hand and asking where this idea came from and how it will be used in the future. When you receive an answer, you may be like me; it will produce five more questions.

Along this vein of thought, ask those with whom you work for critiques on improving. Make sure you ask for help from people who want the best for you. This way, the criticism is given in a positive light, no matter how negative it may be, and is provided in the hope that it helps you. Use this feedback as a tool for improvement rather than as discouragement.

·       Embrace Challenges: View Them as Opportunities

Randy Pausch, the author of The Last Lecture, tells us that the walls we are confronted with are not there to stop us but to see how badly we want to continue moving forward. Challenges are often seen as roadblocks, but can be invaluable learning opportunities!

If it were easy, everyone would be where you want to go. If everyone is already there, then you are in the wrong place. Understand that this new journey will be difficult, but because it is your passion and purpose, enjoy the struggle. Frederick Douglass tells us, “If there is no struggle, there is no progress.” Enjoy the hard times with an open heart and mind—they may lead you toward unforeseen growth paths.

Continuous Evolution: The Ongoing Journey

·       Personal Development: Never Stop Growing

Personal development is an endless process of improving skills and knowledge. Commit yourself to lifelong learning; read books, attend seminars, or even enroll in courses that may not necessarily be your standard learning arc.

Steve Jobs took a class in calligraphy, which had nothing to do with his field of study. What value was it for him to do this? Because of this class, he prioritized fonts when he and Steve Wozniak were building the prototypes of the Apple computer. Without this, his computer did what everyone else's computer did, which changed how their computer was received. All because he stepped out of his comfort zone.

·       Cultivate a Growth Mindset

Adopting a growth mindset means believing that abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work. When faced with challenges or setbacks, remember that each experience contributes to your overall development! This is called PERSPECTIVE. The farther we travel down our path, the more we will not forget every metaphorical flat tire and gravel road. These will be the things that we laugh about when we get out on the other end.

When we look at the timeline of life, we have the PAST, the PRESENT, and the FUTURE. We cannot change the past. Level I thinkers get stuck in the past; they cannot evolve and will end up getting stuck.

The Level II thinker will live in the present. They will work on their projects and be the “get it done” person in their workspace. The problem is that they will not have a clue how their project fits into the big picture.

The Level III thinker uses perspective to learn from the past so they can build a better project in the present that will be able to expand and continue to grow into the future. It is essential to have this ability to continue to grow and think outside the box as they move along their path.

·       Resilience: Bouncing Back Stronger

Lastly, resilience plays a pivotal role in personal growth. Life will inevitably throw curveballs at you, but how you respond matters most! Resilience isn’t just about surviving a challenge; it’s all about thriving in the face of it.

When I was asked to become the head strength coach at the University of Southern California, I had been diagnosed with cancer just a few weeks before. I had the choice to curl up in a ball and feel sorry for myself, or take the step that led me to the most incredible ride of my coaching career. Resilience is taking one more step forward, and then another and another until you walk through the chaos.

It all starts with you believing in yourself. Don't let the rocks life throws at you slow you down. Know you are stronger than you believe. A study showed that people will quit and think they are done while actually only being 40% finished. Find the will and the “team” that will push you on, and you will accomplish everything you set your mind on completing!
