Respect Is Earned, Not Owed
Respect is one of those things we all want, but too often we spend more time expecting it than figuring out what we have done to earn it. We expect respect because of our position, our experience, our age, our accomplishments, or simply because we believe we deserve it. There may be legitimate reasons behind each of those expectations, but expectations exist inside of us. Respect exists in other people's minds. That means we don't get to decide when someone respects us. We can only decide whether our actions give them a reason to.
Control the Evidence: Perception Starts With You
Every time we walk into a room, we are giving people information about who we are. How we speak. How we listen. How we dress. How we respond when someone disagrees with us. Whether we smile and speak or keep our distance. Whether we show up prepared or scramble at the last minute. Whether our words today support the words we used yesterday. Long before someone knows us well enough to understand who we are, they begin forming an opinion based on the evidence we put in front of them day after day.
We spend a lot of time worrying about what other people think about us, but often fail to recognize how much information we provide to help them reach those conclusions. We cannot control another person's mind. Someone may misread confidence as arrogance, intensity as anger, kindness as weakness, or privacy as being antisocial. We don't get the final vote on what another person thinks about us, but we have tremendous influence over the evidence they use to make that decision.
Respect and Consistency: Foundation for Success
There’s a reason the elite seem unshaken. It’s not just talent. It’s not just titles. It’s because they’ve earned something that can’t be bought, inherited, or faked: RESPECT. And the foundation of that respect is one thing—CONSISTENCY.
Not loud consistency. Not look-at-me consistency. But the kind you can count on. The kind that always shows up at 6:00 a.m. on a Monday when the day doesn’t start until 7:00 a.m. The person who looks exactly the same no matter whether they are in the middle of a crisis, a record-breaking quarter, or a pink slip meeting. Prepared and organized with a 'Get To' mindset. That kind of consistency builds trust, and trust is the currency of leadership.
Set the Bar Higher
Did you hear that?
That collective sigh of relief.
That sound came from 99% of the population after hearing that “they only need to compete with themselves”. I can hear them, they’re saying, “Finally, I don’t have to try to be much better than I am right now.”
Trust: The Essential Ingredient
I have been blessed with the opportunity to work with some of the greatest athletes that have been in their sport. I’m not afraid to say that I pushed them hard. And I am proud to say that they answered the call … again and again and again. Why?
Because they TRUSTED me!
TRUST is the key ingredient to any successful venture.
When you have trust there is nothing that cannot be achieved. When we don’t believe in each other hard times will follow.
Never Doubt Yourself Again
The biggest killer of your dreams is … the person you see in the mirror everyday of your life!
The biggest reason for your success is … the person you see in the mirror everyday of your life!
You have all the control.
Did you know that? If you did, are you where you always dreamt you would be at this time of your life? If not, maybe you didn’t really know that you were the reason for your present situation.
Dualism: Trust and Faith
I was watching a movie the other night about the Exodus of the Israelites from Egypt. It took the Israelites 40 years to travel from Sinai to Canaan. If you were to walk it today. It would take you ELEVEN DAYS!
Why did it take them 40-years? The people who followed Moses had a lack of Trust and Faith.
They did not trust their leaders – who led them out of the slavery of the Pharaoh.
And they lacked faith in their God. The One who opened the Red Sea allowing them to escape the army of Egypt. The One who, when they were thirsty, brought water from a rock. The One who, when they were hungry, provided manna from the heavens.
Because of a lack of Trust and Faith it took the Israelites 40-years to go a distance that should have taken them 11-days, to get to their promised land.
This Trust and Faith thing is a constant battle in our lives, just like it was to Moses.
Trust is something that you control.
Faith is an inner belief.
Success: Faith and Trust
Did you hear the story about the leader who took forty years to get his group to their optimal destination? We might think that this guy was tenacious. This guy had grit and determination. One who doesn’t know the meaning of quit … right?
What happens if I told you that he could have gotten his group to their destination in eleven days, instead of forty years?
