Time Management: A Force Multiplier

We have all experienced it.

A project that should have taken three days somehow consumes three weeks. A meeting scheduled for an hour turns into ninety minutes without accomplishing anything more than it would have in the first thirty. An assignment that employees insisted would take an entire month is suddenly completed in two days because the deadline was unexpectedly moved up. A weekend DIY project that took two weeks to complete over three months.

The work didn't change.

The time did.

One of the most overlooked realities of leadership is that work naturally expands to fill the time available to complete it. Give people two weeks for a task that requires three days, and many will unconsciously adjust their pace to consume the entire two weeks. It isn't usually laziness. It is human nature. Without a clear target, urgency fades. Decisions are delayed, conversations become longer, and attention slowly drifts toward things that feel productive but contribute very little to the final outcome.
